Be careful that you don’t practice your religion in front of people to draw their attention. Whenever you give to the poor, don’t blow your trumpet as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they may get praise from people. (Matthew 6)
We spent the day leading worship with our partner church and participating in an all-Spanish church, with whom we will serve alI week. I don’t think there is any better way to right your focus for a week of mission work than with worship at 2 different churches in 2 different languages.
Jesus speaks against being outwardly religious, speaks quite harshly on people who went through outward religious motions without the inner relationship with God to back it up. God cares a great deal about our inner motives as well as our outward actions. Jesus has no patience for people who do religious things for their own glorification, their own purposes.
Worshipping with the people who organized our week and worshipping with the people we will serve with helps orient my heart in the right place. It helps me to see I do this religious act of service because I love God and people, not because I need approval from others that it is the good and honorable thing to do.
We begin the work of church building and relationship building tomorrow!
